LCD shipments increased 43% in second quarter

Shipments of large-sized liquid crystal display (LCD) panels increased 43% in the second quarter compared to the first quarter and were up 12% from the second quarter of 2008, according to researcher iSuppli.
Shipments increased because of an improving world economy, strong LCD demand in China and a shift to 16-by-9 format panels.
LCD panel shipments increased from 91.7 million in the first quarter of this year to 129.7 million in the second. Shipments in the second quarter of 2008 were about 116 million.
The strong growth in demand, combined with tight supply, resulted in 20-25% panel price increases for mainstream large-sized LCD panels from March to June. The price increases helped panel suppliers move away from below-cost pricing and losses and toward profitability, according to iSuppli. However, prices are expected to fall in the fourth quarter.
